History of Advance
Advance is best known for being the site of a unique community. A post office opened here in 1890. However, it later moved to Kaweah in 1910.
The Kaweah Colony
From 1885 to 1891, Advance was home to the Kaweah Cooperative Colony. This was an experimental community where people tried to live and work together. They shared resources and worked for the good of the group.
Members of the colony were paid for their work. They earned 30 cents an hour for their labor. However, they also had to pay a lot of money to join the colony. This was to help support the community.
Building the Giant Forest Road
One of the biggest projects of the Kaweah Colony was building a road. This road was called the Giant Forest Road, also known as Colony Road. It was very important because it was the only way into Sequoia National Park until the 1920s. The colonists worked hard to create this path into the beautiful park.
In 1891, the settlers of the colony were asked to leave the land. The Kaweah Cooperative Colony then ended the next year. In 1948, a special marker was put up at the site of Advance. This marker helps people remember the history of this interesting community.
