Adventure, Utah facts for kids
Adventure was an early settlement in Washington County, Utah. It was started in 1860 by Philip Klingensmith and five other people. They came from Iron County.
The settlers created this small community to grow cotton. It was located a few miles up the Virgin River from Grafton. Adventure was destroyed by a very big flood in 1862. After the flood, the settlers moved to higher ground. They found a new spot with more room to grow. This new place is now the center of Rockville.
Where Was Adventure?
The original site of Adventure is just west of Rockville's main area. It sits on the south side of the Virgin River. This spot is also east of Grafton. Today, the town boundaries of Rockville include both Adventure and Grafton.
Why Was Adventure Started?
In the 1860s, people in Utah were looking for places to grow cotton. Cotton was an important crop. It was used to make clothes and other goods. Adventure was part of this effort. It was one of several small communities built to support cotton farming in the area.
What Happened to Adventure?
Adventure did not last long. In 1862, a huge flood hit the area. This event is known as the Great Flood of 1862. The flood waters were very powerful. They destroyed the small settlement of Adventure.
After their homes were washed away, the settlers had to move. They found a safer place nearby. This new location was higher up and away from the river's floods. This new settlement grew into what we now know as Rockville.
