Where Does the Pinwheel Plant Grow?
The Aeonium haworthii plant originally comes from the Canary Islands and northern Africa. But it's also been brought to other places with similar sunny, dry weather, like Southern California in the U.S..
This plant loves sunshine and doesn't need a lot of water. It can handle dry conditions very well. You can often find it growing on sandy beaches. It grows as a small bush with tough, woody stems. Its leaves are thick and green, often with reddish edges. They can be shaped like triangles, diamonds, or spades.
What Does the Pinwheel Plant Look Like?
The pinwheel plant grows as a small, bushy shrub. It can reach up to 60 centimeters (about 2 feet) tall. Its stems are thin and can grow upwards or hang down.
The leaves grow in a flat, circular shape called a rosette, which looks like a pinwheel! These rosettes can be 6 to 11 centimeters (about 2.5 to 4.5 inches) wide. The leaves are green or yellowish-green, often with a bluish tint. They are thick and have tiny, curved hairs along their edges. The edges of the leaves often turn reddish, especially in the sun.
In the spring, this plant grows tall stalks with clusters of cream-colored flowers. These flower clusters can be 6 to 16 centimeters (about 2.5 to 6 inches) long and wide. The individual flowers are small, pale yellow to whitish, and sometimes have pink stripes.
