The River Llyfnant (Welsh: Afon Llyfnant) is a short river found in Ceredigion, on the west coast of Wales. It starts high up in the mountains south of Machynlleth. The river then flows over a series of amazing waterfalls called Pistyll y Llyn. It drops into a deep valley before joining the larger River Dovey (Welsh: Afon Dyfi) near Dovey Junction railway station.

Where the River Llyfnant Begins
The Llyfnant river starts at a place called Llyn Penrhaiadr. This is in the Uwch Garreg mountains. These mountains are located south of the town of Machynlleth.
The River's Journey Downstream
The river first flows north for about three miles. It passes through beautiful mountain scenery. Then, it suddenly reaches the edge of a steep drop. Here, the water plunges into a deep valley. This is where the famous waterfalls, Pistyll y Llyn, are found. The river drops quickly from about 370 meters down to 210 meters.
After the waterfalls, the river slows down a bit. It starts to curve gently towards the west. It flows past a small village called Gellifudr. This is the first time it meets a road.
Flowing Through Woodlands
The River Llyfnant continues westwards. A road now runs along its right side. It goes through thick woodlands. The river is crossed by its first bridge at a small place called Glaspwll. This bridge carries a small road that goes north to Machynlleth.
Now, the road switches to the river's left side. The river keeps flowing west through a valley with steep sides. Both sides of the valley are covered in trees.
Meeting Other Waterways
As the river reaches flatter ground, it flows under the A487 road at Pont Llyfnant. It then passes under the Cambrian Coast Line railway. This railway connects Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth. The river flows very close to Dovey Junction railway station.
Finally, the River Llyfnant joins the River Dovey. This meeting point is about one mile inland from where the River Dovey flows into the sea. The total length of the River Llyfnant is about ten miles.
Wildlife Around the River
The River Llyfnant is a great place to spot wildlife. You might see small birds called dippers. These birds are known for dipping into the water to find food. You can also often see large red kites flying high above the river. They circle in the sky, looking for prey.
