For many years, Afton had a general store, but it has since closed. Today, Afton is mostly a farming area. The community sometimes experiences flooding during winters when there is a lot of rain.
Afton's History
Afton was first settled in the 1850s. People chose this spot because it was easy to travel and ship goods along the Sacramento River. However, the area often flooded. Because of this, residents had to build their own small walls, called levees, to protect their homes and farms from the water.
Afton's Post Office
Afton had its own post office for several years. It was open from 1887 to 1910. The post office then reopened in 1915 and stayed open until 1923.
Where is Afton Located?
Afton is special because of its location. Along with Butte City, it is one of only two communities in Glenn County that are located east of the Sacramento River. This makes it unique compared to most other places in the county.
