The Antioquia leaf frog, also known as Agalychnis danieli, is a special type of frog. It belongs to a group of frogs called Phyllomedusinae. This frog is found only in Colombia, which means it is endemic there. It was first discovered in a specific place in the northern part of the Western Andes Mountains in the Antioquia Department.

The name danieli was given to this frog to honor Brother Daniel Gonzales Patiño. He was a Colombian monk who loved nature and became the director of the Natural History Museum at the Instituto de La Salle in Bogotá.

About the Antioquia Leaf Frog

The Antioquia leaf frog is a very rare frog. Scientists have only found one young frog of this species so far. This young frog was found sitting on a leaf near a small stream. This stream was located in a primary forest, which means a forest that has not been cut down or changed much by people. The place where it was found was about 1,640 meters (about 5,380 feet) above sea level.

Where it Lives

This special frog is known only from the area where the first one was found. Scientists have gone back to this exact spot to look for more Antioquia leaf frogs, but they haven't found any new ones yet. This makes it very hard to study them and learn more about their lives.

Protecting its Home

The forests where the Antioquia leaf frog lives are facing a big problem. People are cutting down these forests to grow fruits and cacao plants. This means the frogs are losing their homes. Because so few of these frogs have been seen, scientists are worried about their future.

There is hope that the Antioquia leaf frog might also live in nearby protected areas. These include the Las Orquídeas National Natural Park and the Mesenia-Paramillo Nature Reserve. These parks help protect the natural habitats and the animals that live there. Protecting these areas is very important to help rare species like the Antioquia leaf frog survive.
