Agave palmeri, also known as Palmer's century plant, is a very large plant. It belongs to the Agave group, which is part of the Asparagaceae family. This plant naturally grows in parts of southern Arizona, southwestern New Mexico, and the Mexican states of Sonora and Chihuahua. People also often grow it as a decorative plant in other areas.
About Palmer's Century Plant
Agave palmeri is the biggest Agave plant found in the United States. It grows a group of thick, green leaves that spread out from the base. This is called a rosette. The leaves can be up to 120 centimeters (4 feet) long. They have rough edges and sharp spines at their tips. These spines are about 3 to 6 centimeters (1.2 to 2.4 inches) long.
The plant produces pale yellow and green flowers. Each flower is about 1.6 to 2 inches long. These flowers grow on branches along the top part of a very tall stalk, called a flower spike. This flower spike can reach an amazing height of up to 5 meters (16.5 feet)!
Growing Agave palmeri
If you want to grow Agave palmeri, it needs a big pot. However, it is a very tough plant. It can handle many different growing conditions. For example, it can survive in temperatures as low as about –10 °C (14 °F).
