He went to the University of Calabria. There, he studied Letters and Philosophy. After finishing his studies, Loiero worked as a writer. He wrote articles for several newspapers. These included Il Messaggero, L'Unità, and the Gazzetta del Sud.
Getting Started in Politics
Loiero began his political journey with a party called Christian Democracy (DC). He was elected as a city councilor in Catanzaro. A city councilor helps make decisions for the city.
From 1987 to 1994, Loiero was elected to the Chamber of Deputies. This is like one of the main parts of Italy's parliament. He represented the DC party there.
Important Government Roles
In 1996, Loiero joined a new party called the Christian Democratic Centre. With this party, he was elected to the Senate of the Republic. The Senate is the other main part of Italy's parliament.
Later, in 1998, Loiero changed parties again. He joined the Union of Democrats for Europe. After this, he was chosen for important government jobs. He became the Minister for Parliamentary Relations. This role involves working with the parliament. He also became the Minister for Regional Affairs. This job focuses on issues related to Italy's different regions. He held these roles in governments led by Massimo D'Alema and Giuliano Amato.
Leading Calabria
In 2001, Loiero returned to the Chamber of Deputies. However, he left his seat in the Italian Parliament in 2005. This was because he was elected as the president of the Calabria region. As president, he was the main leader of the region.
He tried to be re-elected as governor in 2010 but was not successful. In 2007, Loiero joined the Democratic Party (PD). He supported Rosy Bindi in a leadership election for the party. Loiero left the PD in 2011. He then joined the Movement for the Autonomies (MpA). He left the MpA in 2013 when they made an agreement with another political group.
