Loiero's Start in Politics
Agazio Loiero began his political journey by joining a political party called Christian Democracy (DC). With this party, he was chosen to be a city councilor in Catanzaro. A city councilor helps make decisions for the local city government.
From 1987 to 1994, Loiero was elected to the Chamber of Deputies. This is one of the two main parts of the Italian Parliament, where laws are made for the whole country.
Serving in the Italian Government
In 1996, Loiero became a member of the Senate of the Republic, which is the other main part of the Italian Parliament.
Later, he was appointed as a minister in the Italian government. He served as the Minister for Parliamentary Relations. This role involves helping the government work smoothly with the Parliament. He also became the Minister for Regional Affairs, which means he helped manage issues related to Italy's different regions. He held these important positions in governments led by Massimo D'Alema and Giuliano Amato.
Leading the Calabria Region
In 2001, Loiero returned to the Chamber of Deputies. However, he left his seat in the Italian Parliament when he was elected President of Calabria in the 2005 regional election. As President, he was the top leader of the Calabria region. He worked to improve the region for its citizens.
Loiero tried to be re-elected as governor in the 2010 regional election but was not successful. In 2007, he joined the Democratic Party (PD), another major political party in Italy. He later left this party in 2011 and joined the Movement for the Autonomies (MpA). He left the MpA in 2013.
