Giuseppe Chiaravalloti (born February 26, 1934 – died January 6, 2025) was an important Italian judge and politician. He is best known for serving as the President of Calabria, a region in southern Italy.
Early Life and Education
Giuseppe Chiaravalloti was born in a town called Satriano, located in the province of Catanzaro, Italy. He studied Law at the University of Genoa. During his time at university, he even had the famous actor and writer Paolo Villaggio as a classmate for a short period.
Career as a Judge
Chiaravalloti began his career in the legal system, known as the magistracy, in 1959. He started working as a judge in the district court of Crotone. From 1964 to 1976, he was a full-time judge.
Later, he became an attorney in Catanzaro. An attorney is a lawyer who represents the government in legal cases. In 1991, he was assigned to a higher position as a General Attorney at the Appellate court of Catanzaro. An Appellate court reviews decisions made by lower courts. From 1997 to 2000, he served as the attorney general at the Appellate court in Reggio Calabria.
After his time as a political leader, Chiaravalloti continued to work in public service. From 2005 to 2012, he was a commissioner and vice-president of the Authority for the protection of personal data. This organization helps protect people's private information.
Political Leadership
Giuseppe Chiaravalloti became a leading figure in Italian politics. He was chosen as the main candidate for the House of Freedoms political group. His goal was to become the President of Calabria.
In the regional election held in 2000, he won the vote. He then served as the President of Calabria for five years. This role meant he was the head of the regional government, responsible for many important decisions in Calabria.
Later Years and Death
Giuseppe Chiaravalloti passed away on January 6, 2025, at the age of 90.
