Ages is a small community in Harlan County, Kentucky, in the United States. It's known as an unincorporated place, which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. It's also a census-designated place (CDP), which is an area the government uses to collect population information. Ages was originally a coal town, a community built around coal mining.

A Look Back: The Story of Ages
The community of Ages got its start a long time ago. In 1892, a post office was opened here. A post office is where you send and receive mail.
In 1975, the post office moved to a nearby place called Brookside, Kentucky. Its name was changed to "Ages-Brookside." The community itself is named after a stream nearby called Ages Creek.
The U.S. Census Bureau officially listed Ages as a census-designated place (CDP) in 2014. This means it's an area defined for gathering population data. In 2017, the population was estimated to be about 439 people.
Where is Ages? Geography and Location
Ages is located in the middle of Harlan County, Kentucky. It sits in a valley, which is a low area between hills or mountains. This valley is formed by the Clover Fork of the Cumberland River.
To the west of Ages is another community called Brookside. To the east, you'll find Verda. Both of these are also unincorporated areas.
Mountains Around Ages
The Clover Fork valley is surrounded by mountains. To the north is Black Mountain. To the south is Little Black Mountain.
The land in Ages is about 1,245 feet (379 meters) above sea level. The closest part of Black Mountain reaches about 3,355 feet (1,023 meters) high. Little Black Mountain's closest peak is about 3,380 feet (1,030 meters) tall. Black Mountain continues for about 20 miles (32 kilometers) to its highest point. This highest point is 4,145 feet (1,263 meters) and is the tallest spot in all of Kentucky!
Roads and Travel
Kentucky Route 38 is the main road that goes through Ages. If you travel west on this road, you'll reach Harlan in about 5 miles (8 kilometers). Harlan is the county seat, which means it's where the main government offices for Harlan County are located. If you go east on Route 38, you'll get to Evarts in about 3 miles (5 kilometers).
