Agiñaga's History

The village of Agiñaga has a long history. It was first mentioned in a document from the year 1114. This document was about a gift of land. Diego López of Lejarzo gave a monastery to San Millán. Along with the monastery, he also gave Agiñaga and Salmantón. The gift included "trees, mountains, meadows, and pastures."

Important people from Agiñaga were witnesses to this gift. Their names were Munio Álvarez de Aginaga, Diego Álvarez de Aginaga, and Fortún Álvarez. This shows that Agiñaga was already an established community. The church in Agiñaga used to give part of its income to Saint Millán. This continued until 1827.
