History of the Cathedral
The building of this church started a long time ago, in 1704. A priest named Antonio Flores de Acevedo began the construction. Another priest, Manuel Colón de Larreátegui, finished the work in 1738. This means it took 34 years to build! The special statue of the Virgin of the Assumption, which the cathedral is named after, was brought all the way from Spain.
What the Cathedral Looks Like
The cathedral is made from pink quarry stone, which gives it a unique and beautiful color.
The Front of the Cathedral
The main entrance of the church is very detailed. It has three main parts. The entrance itself is a rounded arch, with a carving of an archangel above it. On the sides of the arch, there are decorative columns with plant designs.
The Towers and Sides
The cathedral has two tall towers that look very similar. They have a style called Neoclassical, which means they look like ancient Greek and Roman buildings. On the sides of the church, the doorways also have rounded arches. These arches are framed by smooth columns that support decorative tops.
