Chaudhry Ahmad Mukhtar (Urdu: احمد مختار) was an important Pakistani politician and businessman. He was born on June 22, 1946, and passed away on November 25, 2020. He is best known for serving as the Defence Minister of Pakistan. This role meant he was in charge of Pakistan's military and national security. He was part of the government led by Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gillani.
Ahmad Mukhtar was also a successful businessman. He owned a company called Servis Group and helped start Shalimar Hospital. He was a key leader in the Pakistan Peoples Party, a major political group. He came from the Gujrat District in Pakistan. In the 2008 elections, he famously won against Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, another important political figure.

Early Life and Education
Ahmad Mukhtar was born in Lahore, Pakistan. He studied Operational Management in California, United States. He also earned a diploma in Plastic Technology from West Germany. He was a graduate of Forman Christian College University. Before entering politics, he was an industrialist, meaning he owned and managed factories.
Starting His Political Journey
Ahmad Mukhtar began his political career in 1990 with the Pakistan Peoples Party. He served as the Commerce Minister from 1993 to 1996. This was during the government of Benazir Bhutto. The Commerce Minister helps manage a country's trade and business.
In 2008, many people thought he might become the next Prime Minister of Pakistan. However, Yousaf Raza Gillani was chosen for the role. On March 31, 2008, Ahmad Mukhtar became the Defence Minister of Pakistan. He held this important position until June 3, 2012. Later, he also served as the Minister for Water and Power from 2012 to 2013. This role involved overseeing the country's water and electricity supply.
Family and Other Roles
Ahmad Mukhtar came from a Jat family in Gujrat. His brother, Ahmad Saeed, was also involved in important roles. Ahmad Saeed served as the Managing Director and Chairman of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) for several years. Ahmad Mukhtar himself took on the role of Chairman of PIA in May 2008. He was also related to Ijaz Butt, a former chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board.
His Final Years
Ahmad Mukhtar passed away on November 25, 2020, at the age of 74. He had been ill for some time.
