Ahmet Taner Kışlalı (born July 10, 1939 – died October 21, 1999) was an important Turkish professor, politician, and writer. He was known for his strong ideas about democracy and education. He worked in the Turkish Parliament and even served as the Minister of Culture.

His Early Life and Education
Ahmet Taner Kışlalı was born on July 10, 1939. He grew up and finished his primary and secondary school in Kilis, a city in Turkey. In 1957, he graduated from a well-known high school called "Kabataş Erkek Lisesi" in Istanbul.
After high school, Kışlalı went to Ankara University. He studied political science there and earned his degree in 1963. While studying, he also worked as an assistant editor for the university newspaper, Yeni Gün.
Studying in Paris
Later, he went to the University of Paris in France. There, he earned his PhD. His special study was about "Political Powers in Contemporary Turkey." This showed his deep interest in how countries are governed.
His Career as a Professor
Ahmet Taner Kışlalı loved teaching and sharing his knowledge.
- From 1968 to 1972, he taught at Hacettepe University.
- After that, he became an assistant professor at Ankara University.
- By 1977, he was an associate professor.
He became a full professor in 1988. Even after he officially retired, he kept teaching political science at Ankara University.
His Political Journey
Kışlalı believed in Kemalism, which are the ideas of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of modern Turkey. He also supported democratic socialism and social democracy. These ideas focus on fairness and equality for everyone.
In 1977, he was elected to the Turkish Parliament. He represented the city of İzmir.
Minister of Culture
From 1978 to 1979, he was chosen to be the Minister of Culture. This was a very important job. During his time as minister, he started a project to print classic books again. This made important books available to many people at low prices. He wanted everyone to have access to culture and knowledge.
After a military takeover in 1980, Ahmet Taner Kışlalı returned to teaching. He also started writing a regular column for a newspaper called Cumhuriyet. His column was titled "Haftaya Bakış," which means "A View of the Week." He shared his thoughts on current events and politics with many readers.
A Tragic Event
On October 21, 1999, Ahmet Taner Kışlalı was tragically killed. He was leaving his home when an explosive device went off. This sad event deeply affected many people in Turkey.
Memorial services were held for him in many places. These included the Turkish Grand National Assembly and Ankara University. He was laid to rest at Karşıyaka Cemetery in Ankara.
