Story of Aida
Act One: Ancient Egypt
The musical begins in a modern museum. In the Egyptian section, a man and a woman meet. A statue of a female Pharaoh named Amneris comes to life. She takes them back in time to Ancient Egypt.
Ramades, the leader of the Egyptian army, returns from a trip. He has been fighting the Nubians, who are Egypt's enemies. Ramades and his soldiers celebrate their bravery ("Fortune Favors The Brave").
The soldiers capture a group of Nubian women. Ramades immediately notices one woman, Aida. She bravely tries to fight off a soldier to free herself. Ramades is impressed by her courage.
Later, Ramades tells Aida to wash his back. She refuses, telling him that Egyptians took everything from Nubians. But she says they will never take their spirit ("The Past Is Another Land").
Ramades saves Aida's friends from a dangerous copper mine. Instead, he sends them to work in the palace gardens. He also sends Aida to be a handmaiden for Amneris. Amneris is the princess of Egypt and is set to marry Ramades.
