Aida de la Fuente Penaos (born February 25, 1915, in León, Spain – died October 13, 1934, in Oviedo, Spain), known by many as Aida Lafuente, was a young Spanish activist. She was a member of the Communist Party and sadly died during a big workers' uprising in Asturias in 1934. This event was met with strong action by the government at the time, the Second Spanish Republic.
Aida's Early Life and Activism
Aida de la Fuente was born on February 25, 1915, in León, a city in Spain. Her parents were Gustavo de la Fuente and Jesusa Penaos. Aida's father was a painter who created posters and sets for the Campoamor Theater
in Oviedo, Asturias. He was also one of the people who helped start the Communist Party of Spain in Oviedo.Aida, along with her brothers, was very active in a group called the Communist Youth of Spain. This group was for young people who believed in the ideas of communism, which is a political and economic system. They worked to organize and support the party's goals.
Remembering Aida's Impact
After the Spanish Civil War began a few years later, Aida Lafuente's name became well-known. Her image appeared on many posters used to spread political messages. These posters helped to inspire people.
In October 1936, a military group, the 1st Asturian Battalion, was even renamed in Aida's honor. This showed how important she had become as a symbol. Today, you can find a street named after her in Gijon, another city in Spain. There is also a special monument in Oviedo that remembers Aida and her bravery.
