Aidong Zhang's Journey in Science
Early Education and University Roles
Aidong Zhang earned her highest degree, a PhD, in 1994 from Purdue University. After that, she started working at the University at Buffalo in the computer science department. She began as an assistant professor in 1994. She became a full professor in 2002. Later, she was named a "Distinguished Professor" in 2012 and 2014. This means she was recognized as a top expert in her field.
From 2009 to 2015, Professor Zhang led the computer science department at the University at Buffalo. She then took a break from 2015 to 2018 to work for the National Science Foundation. This organization helps fund important research. In 2019, she moved to the University of Virginia. She is still honored as a "professor emerita" at the University at Buffalo. This title is given to retired professors who are still highly respected.
Leading in Computer Science
Professor Zhang helped start a special group within the ACM. This group focuses on bioinformatics, computational biology, and biomedical informatics. She was the leader of this group from 2011 to 2015. Since 2017, she has also been the main editor for an important science magazine called IEEE/ACM Transactions on Computational Biology and Bioinformatics.
Books by Aidong Zhang
Professor Zhang has written several books to share her knowledge. These include Advanced Analysis of Gene Expression Microarray Data, published in 2006. She also wrote Protein Interaction Networks: Computational Analysis, which came out in 2009. These books help other scientists learn about her research.
Awards and Honors
Aidong Zhang has received many important awards for her work. In 2009, she was chosen as an IEEE Fellow. This honor recognized her contributions to how we organize and find multimedia data. In 2017, she was named an ACM Fellow. This award was for her important work in bioinformatics and data mining. These awards show how much her work has helped the field of computer science.
