Aiguá is a city located in the Maldonado Department of Uruguay. Its name comes from the Guaraní language and means running water. Aiguá is not just a city; it's also the name of the larger area, or municipality, that the city is part of. This municipality includes several smaller places like Sauce de Aiguá, Sarandí de Aiguá, and others.

Where is Aiguá?
Aiguá is found in the northern part of the Maldonado Department. It sits where two roads, Route 39 and Route 109, meet. The city is about 88 kilometers (55 miles) north of Maldonado, which is the capital city of the department.
Natural Surroundings
The city is located on the east side of the Arroyo de Aiguá stream. This stream is one of the main rivers that flows into the Cebollatí River. The area around Aiguá is also home to Uruguay's highest point, a mountain called Cerro Catedral. This peak reaches an altitude of about 513.66 meters (1,685 feet) above sea level.
Aiguá's History
Aiguá has grown quite a bit over the years. It was first officially recognized as a "Pueblo" (which means village) on May 9, 1906. Later, on January 4, 1956, its status was upgraded to "Ciudad" (meaning city) by a special law.

In 2011, a count showed that 2,465 people lived in the city of Aiguá. However, if you look at the entire municipality of Aiguá, which includes the city and its surrounding areas, the population is larger, around 4,500 people.
