Airmont is a small, unincorporated community in Loudoun County, Virginia, United States. An unincorporated community is a place that isn't officially a town or city, but still has people living there.
Airmont is located in the Loudoun Valley. You can find it where two roads meet: Snickersville Pike (Route 734) and Airmont Road (Route 719). It's about 4 miles (6.4 km) south of Round Hill and 3 miles (4.8 km) east of Bluemont.
History of Airmont
Airmont started as a small gathering of homes and a general store. This was after the Snickersville Turnpike road opened. But it wasn't called Airmont until 1897.
How Airmont Got Its Name
In 1897, the United States Post Office opened a branch here. The first postmaster, Lucien Whiting Powell, got to name the place. Powell was a famous landscape painter. He chose "Airmont" because of the beautiful views to the west. He also wanted to honor the nearby village of Philomont. Powell himself was born just a few miles away from Airmont.
Growth and Decline
The post office helped Airmont grow. By 1908, about 25 people lived there. This led to a school being built the next year. However, the post office closed in 1912. This happened because of Rural Free Delivery, which meant mail was delivered directly to homes.
Like many small villages, Airmont faced challenges during the Great Depression. The school closed in 1931. Over the years, many old buildings were destroyed by fire or torn down. Only the general store has survived, though it has changed owners many times.
