The Ajay River is an important river in India. It flows through three states: Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal. This river is a vital part of the landscape and history of these regions.

About the Ajay River

The Ajay River starts its journey on a small hill. This hill is about 300 meters (980 feet) high. It is located southwest of a town called Deoghar in Jharkhand. From there, the river begins its long path.

Its Journey

After starting in Jharkhand, the Ajay River flows through the state. It then crosses into West Bengal at a place called Simjuri. The river continues its flow into the Katwa area. This area is part of the Bardhaman district. It enters this district near Nareng village.

Finally, the Ajay River meets another big river. It joins the Bhagirathi River in Katwa Town. The total length of the Ajay River is about 288 kilometers (179 miles). About 152 kilometers (94 miles) of its length are in West Bengal.

River Branches

Rivers often have smaller streams that flow into them. These are called tributaries. The Ajay River has several important tributaries. In Jharkhand, two main ones are Pathro and Jayanti. In the Bardhaman district of West Bengal, Tumuni and Kunur are key tributaries.

The River Valley

The area around the Ajay River is known as the Ajay valley. This valley was once covered in thick forests. These forests had many types of trees. Some common trees were sal, piyasal, and palas.

However, over time, many of these forests were cut down. This happened because of mining and other human activities.

Floods and the Ajay River

Rivers can sometimes cause floods. The Ajay River has caused floods in the past. In the 20th century, there were at least 14 recorded floods from this river.
