Akbar Mohammadi's Story
Akbar Mohammadi was born in the city of Amol in northern Iran. His father was Muhammad Mohammadi. Akbar had a brother named Manuchehr and a sister named Simin.
The Protests and Arrest
During the July 1999 student protests, Akbar's brother, Manuchehr, was arrested. He was accused of being a leader in the protests. Because of his connection to Manuchehr, Akbar was also arrested. He was first given a very serious sentence, but this was later changed. In November 2000, Akbar's sentence was reduced to seven years in prison.
A few years later, in 2003, two more years were added to Akbar's prison sentence. This happened because he had given interviews to news groups outside of Iran. He also made what were called "political statements."
Family's Efforts
For some time, Akbar and Manuchehr's family did not know where they were. When they found out their sons had been arrested, their father Muhammad and sister Simin tried to help them. They worked hard to get information and support for Akbar and Manuchehr. Sadly, both Muhammad and Simin were also arrested. They were sent to Evin prison. Reports said Simin was treated harshly before her father.
His Death in Prison
On July 30, 2006, Akbar Mohammadi died in Evin prison. He had been on a hunger strike for over a week. A hunger strike is when someone refuses to eat. He was protesting because authorities would not let him get medical help. He needed treatment for injuries he had received.
Akbar Mohammadi's lawyer, Khalil Bahramian, spoke about his death. He said that other prisoners claimed Akbar had been roughly treated by prison guards. They said he had signs of these actions.
Global Reaction
Akbar Mohammadi's death caused a lot of concern internationally. On August 3, 2006, an organization called Human Rights Watch asked the Iranian government to allow an independent investigation. This meant they wanted a fair and unbiased look into his death. Hundreds of important Iranian people and groups supported this request.
