Akeem Bostick's Baseball Journey
Starting Out in High School
Akeem Bostick grew up in Florence, South Carolina. He went to West Florence High School. There, he was the best pitcher on the school's baseball team. In his final year, Akeem had an amazing record. He won 9 games and lost 0. His earned run average (ERA) was very low at 0.68. This means batters had a tough time scoring runs against him. He also got 84 strikeouts in 51 innings. Akeem also played for Florence Post 1 in American Legion Baseball. He helped his team win the state championship in 2012.
Joining Professional Teams
Akeem was planning to go to Georgia Southern University. He wanted to play both baseball and American football there. But then, the Texas Rangers picked him in the 2013 MLB draft. He was the 62nd player chosen overall. Akeem decided to sign with the Rangers instead of going to college. He reportedly received a signing bonus of over $500,000.
His first professional team was the Arizona Rangers. He played there in 2013. In 2014, he moved to the Hickory Crawdads.
Moving to the Houston Astros
In 2015, the Rangers traded Akeem to the Houston Astros. He played for a few of their minor league teams. These included the Quad Cities River Bandits and the Lancaster JetHawks. He continued to play for different Astros minor league teams in the following years. He pitched for the Buies Creek Astros and the Corpus Christi Hooks. In 2018, he played for Corpus Christi and the Fresno Grizzlies. He stayed with the Astros organization until August 2019.
Playing Independent Baseball
After leaving the Astros, Akeem joined the Kansas City T-Bones. This team is part of an independent league, meaning it's not connected to MLB teams. He played well for them in 2019. In 2020, he played for the Sugar Land Skeeters. They were part of a special independent league created during that time.
Signing with the Cardinals and Mets
In September 2020, Akeem signed a minor league contract with the St. Louis Cardinals. However, he didn't get to play any games for them that year. In March 2021, he was released by the Cardinals.
A few months later, in May 2021, Akeem signed with the New York Mets. He was assigned to their Triple-A team, the Syracuse Mets. He pitched in 10 games for them.
Major League Debut
On July 28, 2021, Akeem's dream came true. The Mets called him up to the major leagues! He made his MLB debut on July 29, 2021. He pitched a scoreless inning against the Atlanta Braves. He got three batters out and only walked one. It was a great first game in the big leagues!
Soon after his debut, Akeem was sent back to the Triple-A Syracuse team.
Later Independent League Teams
In 2022, Akeem signed with the Kansas City Monarchs. This is another team in an independent league. Later that year, he joined the Wild Health Genomes. He pitched in 19 games for them.
In 2023, Akeem signed with the Sioux Falls Canaries. He started 15 games for them. He was even named an All-Star for the Canaries that season! After the 2023 season, he became a free agent.
