Akhilesh Das Gupta (born March 31, 1961 – died April 12, 2017) was an important person in India. He was an educator, a professor, and a politician. He also helped many people through his charity work.
Akhilesh Das Gupta was the son of Babu Banarasi Das. His father was a freedom fighter and a former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. Akhilesh Das Gupta was also a leader in sports. He was the president of the Badminton Association of India. He was also a vice president of the Indian Olympic Association.
Early Life and Education
Akhilesh Das Gupta was born on March 31, 1961. He went to school at Colvin Taluqdars College in Lucknow. He studied Public Administration, Law, and Business. He also earned a PhD in Management.
He was a talented badminton player. He played for his home state, Uttar Pradesh, from 1977 to 1983. He also played for India in many international badminton games.
His Work and Career
Akhilesh Das Gupta was known as a great educator. He also worked to help society.
- He started the Babu Banarasi Das University, Lucknow in 1998. He was its first leader.
- He was in charge of the Babu Banarasi Das Educational Institutions. These schools teach over 30,000 students every year. They offer courses in many subjects like Engineering and Law.
- He was the Mayor of Lucknow, a big city in Uttar Pradesh. He served from May 1993 to November 1996. He helped a lot with the city's growth.
- He was a Member of Parliament (MP) in the Rajya Sabha. This is a very important job in India's government. He served for 18 years, from November 1996 to November 2014.
- He was also a Minister for Steel from January 2006 to May 2008. He worked under Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh.
- He was a leader in the Congress political party. He served as secretary of the Congress Parliamentary Party. He also helped organize elections for the party.
- He was the national general secretary of another political party, the Bahujan Samaj Party, from 2008 to 2014.
Death
Akhilesh Das Gupta passed away on April 12, 2017. He died from a heart attack at his home.
