Akiko Hatsu's Career Journey

Akiko Hatsu started helping her older sister, Yukiko Kai, who was also a professional manga artist, while she was still in high school. After finishing high school, Akiko Hatsu worked at a printing company in Kanazawa City. However, she soon left that job to become a full-time assistant to her sister. She also helped other famous artists, like Moto Hagio.

During this time, Akiko Hatsu created her own self-published manga, called dōjinshi, with her friend Yasuko Sakata. Yasuko Sakata also became a well-known manga artist later on. Around 1980, Akiko Hatsu and Yasuko Sakata created the term yaoi. In 1980, Akiko Hatsu's sister, Yukiko Kai, sadly passed away. The next year, Akiko Hatsu officially started her professional career. Her first published short story was called "Elegy of the Waves" (波の挽歌, Nami no Banka). It appeared in a magazine called ALLAN.

Her manga stories have been published in many different magazines. Some of these include DUO, Grapefruit (グレープフルーツ, Gurēpufurūtsu), and Petit Flower. Petit Flower later changed its name to flowers. She also published in Strange Stories for Sleepless Nights (眠れぬ夜の奇妙な話, Nemureru Yo no Kimyō na Hanashi), which later became Nemuki (ネムキ). Akiko Hatsu also taught as a special instructor at Kyoto Seika University. She stopped teaching in 2005 because of health reasons.
