Ishikawa Prefecture (石川県, Ishikawa-ken) is a special area in Japan, like a state or province. It's located in the Chūbu region on the big island of Honshū. The main city and capital of Ishikawa is Kanazawa.

A Look at Ishikawa's Past

Ishikawa Prefecture was created by joining two older areas of Japan. These were called Kaga Province and the smaller Noto Province. Think of it like two smaller kingdoms coming together to form a bigger one!

Exploring Ishikawa's Geography

Ishikawa Prefecture is located along the coast of the Sea of Japan. To its east, you'll find Toyama Prefecture and Gifu Prefecture. The southern part of Ishikawa shares a border with Fukui Prefecture.

Key Geographic Features

  • Noto Peninsula: This is a large piece of land that sticks out into the Sea of Japan in the northern part of the prefecture. It's known for its beautiful coastline.
  • Mountains in the South: The southern part of Ishikawa is mostly covered by mountains.
  • Coastal Plains: The capital city, Kanazawa, is located on a flat area near the coast.

Islands of Ishikawa

Ishikawa Prefecture also includes a few islands in the Sea of Japan. Some of these islands are Notojima, Mitsukejima, and Hegurajima.

Cities You Can Visit

Ishikawa Prefecture has many cities. Here are some of the main ones:

  • Hakui
  • Hakusan
  • Kaga
  • Kahoku
  • Kanazawa (This is the capital city!)
  • Komatsu

Protecting Nature: National Parks

About 13% of all the land in Ishikawa Prefecture is set aside as National Parks. These parks help protect the beautiful natural areas and wildlife for everyone to enjoy.

Important Shrines and Temples

Japan has many special places for worship called shrines and temples. In Ishikawa Prefecture, two very important Shinto shrines are Shirayamahime jinja and Keta jinja. These are known as the chief shrines (or ichinomiya) of the prefecture.
