Akron, Missouri facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Akron is a small, quiet place in the northeast part of Harrison County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. It's known as an unincorporated community, which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town does. Instead, it's part of the larger county. You can find Akron about six miles north-northwest of Cainsville and six miles east-northeast of Blythedale. The Thompson River flows nearby, just about half a mile to the east.

History of Akron

Akron was officially planned and marked out on a map in 1858. This process is called "platting." The community was named after Akron, Ohio, because many of the first people who settled there came from that Ohio city.

A post office was opened in Akron in 1861. This was an important place for people to send and receive letters and packages. The post office served the community for many years, but it eventually closed down in 1908.

By 1925, about 35 people lived in Akron.
