Aksel Vilhelmsson Johannesen was born on November 8, 1972. He is a lawyer and a well-known politician from the Faroe Islands. He belongs to the Social Democratic Party, also known as Javnaðarflokkurin. Aksel Johannesen is currently the Prime Minister of the Faroe Islands. He was also the Prime Minister from 2015 to 2019. Before becoming a politician, he was a football player.

Aksel Johannesen's Political Journey
Aksel Johannesen has had an important career in politics in the Faroe Islands. He has held several key positions in the government.
Early Steps in Parliament
In the 2008 Faroese general election, Aksel Johannesen was a substitute member of the Løgting, which is the Faroese Parliament. This meant he would sometimes take a seat in parliament when another member was not there.
Becoming a Minister
He became the Minister of Health on July 16, 2009. Later, on February 21, 2011, he changed roles and became the Minister of Finance. At the same time, he was chosen as the leader of the Social Democratic Party on March 5, 2011.
Aksel Johannesen was also appointed as the Deputy Prime Minister on April 6, 2011. However, on November 14, 2011, the government changed, and his party was no longer part of the new government. After this, he became the chairman of the Social Democratic Party in the Løgting.
Leading the Government
In the Faroese general election on September 1, 2015, Aksel Johannesen's party won the election. This led to him becoming the Prime Minister. He received a record number of personal votes in that election, with 2,405 votes. This broke the previous record set by Kaj Leo Holm Johannesen in 2011.
He served as Prime Minister until the 2019 Faroese general election when his party was voted out of power. However, he returned to lead the government again after the 2022 Faroese general election.

Before his political career, Aksel Johannesen was also known for his sports achievements.
Football Career
Aksel Johannesen played football for his hometown club, KÍ Klaksvík. He mostly played as a forward, which is a player who tries to score goals. Even though he wasn't always in the starting team, he helped his club win important titles. KÍ Klaksvík won the Faroese League in 1991 and the national cup in 1994. In the 1994 cup final, he came in as a substitute and helped his team win 2-1.
Other Sports
Besides football, Aksel Johannesen was also a talented runner. In 1994, he was the national champion in the 100-meter race. He also played volleyball for the Mjølnir club in Klaksvík.

Aksel Johannesen has a family and a background in law.
Education and Family
He studied law at the University of Copenhagen and earned his Master of Law degree in 2004. From 2007, he worked as a lawyer in Tórshavn until he became a full-time politician.
He is married to Katrin Apol, and they have three children together. His parents are Johild and Vilhelm Johannesen. His father, Vilhelm Johannesen, was also a politician. Aksel Johannesen is also the uncle of Beinir Johannesen, who is the chairman of the People's Party.
Club Leadership
Aksel Johannesen was also the president of the football club Klaksvíkar Ítróttarfelag (KÍ Klaksvík), the same club he played for when he was younger.
