Akumal is a small, sunny community right on the beach in Mexico. It's about 100 kilometers (62 miles) south of Cancún. You can find it between the towns of Playa del Carmen and Tulum. Akumal is part of the beautiful Riviera Maya area. In 2010, about 1,310 people lived there.
Akumal is super popular for snorkeling. People love to swim here with amazing green sea turtles. These turtles come to the bay to eat seagrass. Because so many people visit, it's important to protect this special home for the turtles.
History of Akumal
Akumal was officially started in 1958. It was created as a special place for scuba divers. A Mexican businessman named Pablo Bush Romero founded it. He was a diver, writer, historian, and archaeologist. His family still owns some parts of Akumal today.
To help protect the turtles, Akumal Bay became a marine refuge on March 7, 2016. This means it's a safe zone for them.
In 2018, the Akumal Arts Festival began. Every November, this event brings over 120 artists to Akumal. They come from Mexico and other countries. It's one of the biggest mural festivals in the world.
