Alfred James "Al" Brady (born October 25, 1910 – died October 12, 1937) was a well-known criminal from Indiana. In the 1930s, he became one of the FBI's "Public Enemies."
Al Brady and another person were killed in a surprise attack by FBI agents. This happened in downtown Bangor, Maine, in 1937. The big gunfight that led to the end of "The Brady Gang" is an important part of Maine history. People even re-enacted the event in 2007.
Al Brady's Life and Burial
Al Brady faced many losses when he was young. He lost his father when he was only two years old. His mother passed away when he was 16, and his stepfather died when he was 18.
Because he had no living family, no one claimed Al Brady's body after he died. He was buried in an unmarked grave at Mount Hope Cemetery in Bangor. In 2007, a stone was finally placed on his grave. A short religious ceremony was held there. This happened at the same time as the re-enactment of the shootout in Bangor's downtown area.
Al Brady in Books
The story of Al Brady's final shootout inspired a famous author. In Stephen King's novel It, a fictional gangster named Al Bradley is killed in Derry, Maine. This part of the book is based on the real gunfight that took place in Bangor.
