Albert Eugene Chambers was born on March 24, 1961. He is a former American professional baseball player. He played for the Seattle Mariners in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1983 to 1985.
Al Chambers' Baseball Journey
Al Chambers was a talented baseball player. He was chosen as the very first player in the entire 1979 Major League Baseball Draft. This was a big deal, as teams pick players they think will be future stars. The Seattle Mariners picked him right out of high school.
A Top Draft Pick
Being the first pick in the draft is a huge honor. It means many teams wanted him. However, Al Chambers only played in 57 games during his MLB career. This was a shorter career than many expected for a top draft pick.
Other Players from the 1979 Draft
The 1979 MLB draft had many other players who went on to have long careers. For example, the Toronto Blue Jays picked Jay Schroeder. He later became a quarterback in the National Football League (NFL).
Other notable players from that same draft round included:
- Tim Leary
- Andy Van Slyke
- Steve Buechele
- Brad Komminsk
- Tim Wallach
- Rick Leach
- Jerry Don Gleaton
These players all had much longer careers in Major League Baseball compared to Al Chambers.
