The Alabama vertigo (Vertigo alabamensis) is a tiny land snail. It belongs to a group called Vertiginidae, also known as whorl snails. This snail is found in the southeastern United States.

What Does the Shell Look Like?

The shell of the Alabama vertigo is very small. It is about 1.8 millimeters long. That's less than a tenth of an inch! Its width is about 1 millimeter.

The shell has a cylinder shape, but it is also a bit oval. It has a pale brown color. The shell has a special opening called the lip. This lip is folded back.

Inside the shell's opening, there are seven small tooth-like bumps. These bumps are called denticles. They help protect the snail.

Where Does This Snail Live?

The Alabama vertigo snail lives in the United States. You can find it in several states. These include North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, Florida, and Georgia.

This snail likes certain types of places to live. It can be found in pine savanna areas. It also lives in bay forests and bog habitats.

Life Cycle of the Snail

The young snails hatch in the spring. Adult snails can be seen during the spring and early summer months. By late summer, most of the adult snails are gone.
