Alamillo Park (which is Parque del Alamillo in Spanish) is a large park located between the towns of Santiponce and Seville in Spain. This park is set to become one of Spain's biggest city parks. It will grow to cover 120 hectares (that's about 300 acres!).

History of the Park

The park first opened to the public in 2009. Before that, it was part of the Expo of 1992. During the Expo, it became a special wildlife area covering about 10 hectares.

Later, a collection of over 100 different plant types was added. There was also a greenhouse built for plants.

The regional government helped create Alamillo Park for the Universal Exposition of Seville. The park covers 85 acres of Cartuja Island. This island is located between the old and new parts of the Guadalquivir river.

When it's fully finished, Alamillo Park will have many Mediterranean trees. You'll find elm, pine, and poplar trees. It will also have the special cork oak tree. In spring, the air in the park often smells sweet because of the bitter orange trees.

Park Environment

The park is built around two lakes. They are called Lake Maggiore and Minor Lake. The park has many places for fun, relaxation, and sports. The names of the lakes also describe the plants around them and how they can be used.

Fun Activities

You can take an ecological tour of the park. On this tour, you can learn about the animals that live there. These include mammals, amphibians, reptiles, and waterfowl (birds that live near water).

During July and August, there's a special program called "Summertimes Alamillo." The Junta de Andalucia organizes these cultural activities. People of all ages can enjoy shows, rides, theater, and other fun events.

On Sunday mornings, there are more activities. You can enjoy swings, go biking, or take train rides.

The Friends of the Railroad designed a miniature railway called Railway Alamillo. It's a 127-meter-long track. Both kids and adults can ride on steam and electric trains that actually work with coal!

Every year on October 12, Alamillo Park celebrates its "Big Birthday Bash." This event includes tasting cake, watching performances, and taking train tours.

You can also go on guided visits to the park's plant nursery.

The park also has one of the biggest areas in the city for urban gardening. This is where people can grow their own food in the city.

Park Infrastructure

The Junta de Andalucía helps pay for the park's security and maintenance.
