Alamucha (also spelled Alamutcha) is a small, unincorporated community in Lauderdale County, Mississippi, United States. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town.

It is located about 16 kilometers (10 miles) east of Meridian. It is also about 3.5 kilometers (2.2 miles) west of the Alabama state line.

A Look Back at Alamucha

Alamucha started as a settlement for the Choctaw people, a Native American tribe. It got its name from the nearby Alamuchee Creek.

Early Days of Settlement

Alamucha became one of the first places in Lauderdale County where people who were not Native Americans settled. In 1838, a special road for mail delivery was made. It went from Marion, through Alamucha, all the way to Gaston, Alabama. By 1841, Alamucha even had its own post office!

In 1850, a group called the Grand Masonic Lodge of Mississippi opened a local branch, Lodge No. 130, in Alamucha.

Alamucha During the Civil War

During the American Civil War, in 1861, a local plantation owner named Peter H. Bozeman gathered men to form a group called "The Alamucha Infantry." Bozeman became their captain. Volunteers from different counties, including Clarke, Lauderdale, Newton, and Tippah, joined this group.

The Alamucha Infantry (Company E) became part of the 13th Infantry. John J. McElroy, a merchant from Alamucha, joined Bozeman's Company in May 1861. The next month, he took part in the Battle of First Manassas, which was an important early battle of the war. Later in the war, General Leonidas Polk of the Confederate States Army briefly moved his troops to a spot near Alamucha for safety.

Why Alamucha Changed

Alamucha began to become less important in the 1850s and 1860s. This happened because new railroads were built through towns nearby instead of through Alamucha.

Today, all that remains of the original settlement are some homes along Highway 496. You can also find a station for the Alamucha Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department there.
