Alan Glenn Haller was born on August 9, 1970. He is an American sports leader and a former football player. Today, he is the athletic director at Michigan State University. He has held this important job since September 2021.
Before becoming a director, Alan Haller played professional football. He was a defensive back in the National Football League (NFL). He played for teams like the Pittsburgh Steelers, Cleveland Browns, and Carolina Panthers. The Steelers picked him in the fifth round of the 1992 NFL draft. This means they chose him as a new player joining the league.
He played a total of 12 games over three seasons. Even though he was a defensive back, he mostly played on special teams. These are groups of players who handle specific plays like kickoffs and punts. After the 1995 season, he stopped playing professional football.
After his NFL career, Haller went back to Michigan State University. He became a police officer there for 13 years. He worked his way up to become a 1st Lieutenant. In 2006, he helped choose Mark Dantonio as the head football coach for Michigan State. In 2010, he joined the Michigan State athletic department. He worked as an associate athletics director, helping with human resources and student-athletes.

Alan Haller went to Michigan State University for college. Before that, he attended J. W. Sexton High School in Lansing, Michigan. In high school, he was a great runner, gaining 1,245 yards and scoring 14 touchdowns in his senior year.
He earned a scholarship to play football at Michigan State. The coach, George Perles, changed his position to a defensive back. Haller became a starting player for three years. He played both as a cornerback and a safety. In 1991, his teammates gave him the Co-Captains award for his strong leadership. He finished his college career with three interceptions. An interception is when a defensive player catches a pass meant for an offensive player.
Playing in the NFL
The Pittsburgh Steelers chose Alan Haller in the fifth round of the 1992 NFL draft. He made the team, but he mostly played on special teams. On November 17, 1992, the Steelers let him go.
The Cleveland Browns then picked him up. He also played mostly special teams for them. Less than a month later, he got injured. The Browns then put him on Injured Reserve, meaning he couldn't play. In 1993, the Browns released him. He did not play professional football in 1994.
Later, he signed with the new team, the Carolina Panthers. He played in only two games for them. The Panthers released him before the next season started. This marked the end of his NFL playing career.
Life After Football
On September 1, 2021, Alan Haller was named the athletic director at Michigan State University. He became the 20th athletic director in the school's history. Before this role, he was the assistant vice president and deputy athletic director for Michigan State athletics.
Before working in the MSU Athletic Department, Haller was a police officer. He served with the Michigan State University Police Department for 13 years.
