Alan Lybrooks Henderson (born December 2, 1972) is an American former professional basketball player. He played in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for many years. Alan is 6 feet 9 inches (2.06 meters) tall. He was born in Morgantown, West Virginia.

Alan went to Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School in Indianapolis, Indiana. In his final year of high school, his team lost the state championship game. In 1994, he was part of the US men's basketball team that won a bronze medal at the Goodwill Games. During his NBA career, he scored over 5,000 points and grabbed over 3,000 rebounds.

College Days: A Star at Indiana University

Alan Henderson played college basketball at Indiana University. He was a standout player there. For all four years, he led his team in getting rebounds.

He is the only player from Indiana University to be in the top five for rebounds, blocked shots, and steals. He also ranks ninth in scoring for the school. In 1992, his team made it to the Final Four in the NCAA tournament.

In 1995, Alan had his best scoring year, averaging 23.5 points per game. This was the highest scoring average for any Indiana player during coach Bob Knight's 29 years. Alan was also very smart. He was accepted into medical school at Indiana University and Howard University. He studied biology and is a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity.

NBA Career: Playing with the Pros

In 1995, Alan Henderson was chosen by the Atlanta Hawks in the NBA draft. He was the 16th player picked overall. He played for the Hawks for many years.

Becoming the Most Improved Player

In his first year with the Hawks (1995–96), Alan was second on the team in blocked shots. During the 1997–98 season, he won the NBA Most Improved Player Award. This award is given to a player who has shown the most improvement from the previous season. That year, he averaged 14.3 points and 6.4 rebounds per game.

Even though Alan played well, the Atlanta Hawks team did not often make it far in the Playoffs during his time there.

Moving to Different Teams

After playing for the Hawks, Alan Henderson moved to other teams. In 2004, he was traded to the Dallas Mavericks. He played there for a short time.

In 2005, he was traded again to the Milwaukee Bucks. However, the Bucks released him the very next day. He then re-signed with the Dallas Mavericks.

Later in 2005, Alan signed with the Cleveland Cavaliers. He played in 51 games for them, usually coming off the bench as a power forward.

In 2006, he signed with the Philadelphia 76ers. He was traded to the Utah Jazz in 2007 but was released soon after. He then re-signed with the 76ers to finish his career. Alan played in 652 NBA games, averaging 7.8 points, 5 rebounds, and 0.6 assists.
