Alan Robert Kalter (born March 21, 1943 – died October 4, 2021) was an American television announcer. He was born in Brooklyn, New York. He became very well known as the announcer for the Late Show with David Letterman. He held this job from September 1995 until David Letterman retired in May 2015.

Who Was Alan Kalter?
Alan Kalter was a famous voice on television. He was often called "Big Red" or "TV's Uncle Jerry" by David Letterman. He was the person who introduced guests and read funny lines at the end of the Late Show. He also acted in many funny skits on the show.
His Career as an Announcer
Kalter started his career in broadcasting on local radio stations. He later became a voice for many TV shows and commercials.
He was the main voice for the USA Network for many years in the 1980s and 1990s. He also did voiceovers for many national radio and TV commercials.
Before joining the Late Show, Alan Kalter was the announcer for several other TV shows in New York. These included To Tell the Truth, The $25,000 Pyramid, The Money Maze, and The $128,000 Question. Many of these shows were filmed in the same theater where the Late Show was later produced.
Kalter also announced the 45th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony in New York in 2003.

Alan Kalter was born in Brooklyn in 1943. He grew up in Little Neck and Cedarhurst, New York. His family was Jewish.
Before becoming a full-time announcer, he was an English and Public Speaking teacher. He taught at Baldwin High School on Long Island in the late 1960s. He also provided the voice for the famous Michelin Man character in commercials.
Kalter went to Hobart College in Geneva, New York.
He lived in Stamford, Connecticut. Alan Kalter was married twice. He first married Carol Cepler, and they had two children, Lauren Hass and Diana Binger. Later, he married Peggy Masterson in 2003. He had five grandchildren.
Alan Kalter passed away at Stamford Hospital on October 4, 2021, at the age of 78.
