Alawoona is a small town in the Murray Mallee region of South Australia. In 2006, about 250 people lived there. The town is located where the Karoonda Highway and the Loxton railway line turn north. From Alawoona, they both go north for about 35 kilometers to reach Loxton.
History
Alawoona started as a small railway stop in 1906. It was part of the new Barmera railway line. This stop was about 123 kilometers from Tailem Bend. Soon after, Alawoona became an important railway junction. This happened when a new railway line was built to Loxton.
The town itself was officially planned in 1914. Its name, Alawoona, comes from a local Aboriginal word. It means "place of hot winds." A post office opened in the town on March 1, 1915. It served the community for many years. However, the post office closed its doors on March 18, 1988.
