What's in a Name?
The name of a place often tells a story about its past. This is called toponymy. The name "Albarreal de Tajo" has changed over many years.
The first part, "Alba," might come from old Celtic words like albiga. Long ago, the town was called Albalat. This Arabic word means "the walk" or "the path."
In the 16th century, it was known as Albarreal o Alcalá del Río. Later, in the 17th century, the town received the special title of Villa. This meant it had certain rights and importance. After this, its name became Alba Real. Even today, important families in the area might use the title "Count of Alba Real."
