Exploring Albert Einstein Square

Einstein's Visit to Jerusalem

Albert Einstein visited the land known as Mandatory Palestine in 1923. He stayed for 12 days. During his visit, he gave the very first lecture at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. This lecture took place at its Mount Scopus campus. A leader named Menachem Ussishkin invited Einstein to live in Jerusalem. However, this was the only time Einstein visited the city.

Honoring a Great Scientist

The important papers and writings of Albert Einstein are kept safe today. They are called the Albert Einstein Archives. You can find them at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem's Givat Ram campus. Einstein strongly supported the Hebrew University. He also believed deeply in the power of education for everyone. Because of his support for learning and his connection to the idea of a Jewish homeland, this square was named in his honor. It is located among several important educational and research centers in Israel. There is also a statue of Einstein in the gardens of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities nearby.
