Albert Proud's Football Journey
Early Life and Junior Football
Albert Proud grew up in Melbourne, Victoria. When he was fifteen, he moved to Brisbane. There, he joined the Mount Gravatt Football Club. This club plays in the QAFL.
Proud was chosen to play for Queensland in the AFL Under 18 Championships. He played in both the 2005 and 2006 championships. In 2006, he was the team captain. He led his team to win the premiership that year.
Playing in the AFL
Getting Drafted to the AFL
Experts thought Proud would be picked early in the 2006 AFL draft. This is where AFL teams choose new players. He was compared to famous player Byron Pickett. However, a foot injury caused him to be picked later. The Brisbane Lions chose him as pick number 22.
First Years with the Lions (2007–2008)
When Proud joined the Lions, he received the number 34 jersey, called a guernsey. In his first season (2007), he played only two senior games. But he played almost all games for the Lions' reserve team. He showed a lot of promise for the future.
In 2008, Proud played more senior games, appearing in seven matches. One exciting game was a win against Collingwood in Round 2. He played in four of the last five games that year. In a Round 17 game against North Melbourne, he had a career-high 21 disposals (times he got the ball). He also kicked two goals in that game. That same year, he finished sixth in the Grogan Medal. This award is for the best player in the QAFL. He earned votes in nine games, even though he only played twelve.
Later Seasons (2009–2010)
Proud played in 13 games during the 2009 season.
In 2010, he played two games early in the season. Then, he took a break from the team for personal reasons. He came back in Round 17. In his second game back, he kicked a career-high three goals. This was in a game where his team lost to Melbourne. On 28 October 2010, the Lions decided not to keep him on their main team list. However, on 7 December, the Lions picked him again in the Rookie Draft. He was pick number 47.
NEAFL Career
After leaving the Brisbane Lions, Albert Proud went back to his old club, the Mt Gravatt Vultures. He joined them for the 2011 NEAFL competition. The NEAFL is another Australian rules football league. Proud met with the Vultures coach, David Lake, very soon after leaving the Lions.
