Meet Albert S. Sholes
Albert Seymour Sholes was born in 1844. He moved to Oregon in 1901. First, he lived in Portland, then moved to Hillsboro in 1903. In Hillsboro, he worked as a banker. He helped manage the Hillsboro Commercial Bank.
In 1906, Albert Sholes started to invest in the Cornelius State Bank. He eventually owned most of the bank. In 1909, he had his new home built in Cornelius. It was located on Alpine Street. He also planned out many building lots on his land.
A Leader in Cornelius
In 1910, Albert Sholes left the Hillsboro Commercial Bank. The next year, in 1911, he was chosen to be the mayor of Cornelius. During his time as mayor, he helped start the local fire department. This was a very important step for the town's safety.
His son, Frank H. Sholes, also became mayor later on. Frank served as mayor from 1915 to 1918 and again in 1929.
The House's Journey
Albert Sholes passed away in 1931. A businessman named Percy Hillis bought the house in 1933. The Hillis family kept the house in its original condition for many years. They owned it until the 1960s.
In 1967, Joe and Katherine Redwine bought the house. On September 2, 1982, the Albert S. Sholes House was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places. This recognized its importance. By 2005, Mark Dakins owned the home.

The architect who designed this house was Richard Martin Jr.. He also helped design other important buildings. One example is Waldschmidt Hall at the University of Portland.
The Albert S. Sholes House is a "Craftsman Bungalow" style home. It has a special look called a "Georgian Colonial facade." This means it combines different architectural styles. Inside, the house has a central entrance with stairs. The whole house is designed around this main area. Outside, you can see nice porches and a unique shed-roofed dormer.
