Alberto Sols García (1917–1989) was a very important Spanish scientist. He was a biochemist, which means he studied the chemistry of living things. He is famous for his work on how our bodies use sugar for energy. Many people say he helped start the study of biochemistry in Spain.

Early Life and Background

Alberto Sols was born in a town called Sax, in Alicante, Spain. This was on February 2, 1917. His father was Pedro Sols Lluch.

He passed away in Dénia, Alicante, on August 10, 1989. Today, the house where he was born is a special center. It is called the Alberto Sols Center for Studies and Historical Archive.

His Scientific Work

Sols studied medicine at the University of Valencia in Spain. After finishing his studies, he worked in the United States for three years. He worked with famous scientists Carl and Gerty Cori, who had won a Nobel Prize.

In 1954, Sols returned to Spain. He started his own research group at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). This is a very important science organization in Spain.

His main work was about something called hexokinases. These are special proteins, called enzymes, that help our bodies use sugar. He also studied how our bodies use carbohydrates (sugars) for energy. This is called carbohydrate metabolism.

In 1963, Alberto Sols helped create a new group for scientists in Spain. It was called the Spanish Society of Biochemistry. Today, it is known as the Spanish Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (SEBBM). He was also a member of science groups in other countries like the UK, USA, Argentina, and Chile.

Important Awards and Honors

Alberto Sols received many awards for his amazing work.

  • In 1981, he was the first person to win the "Prince of Asturias Award for Technical and Scientific Research." This is one of the most important science awards in Spain.
  • In 1987, he won the "Santiago Ramón y Cajal" National Research Prize. This award comes from the Ministry of Education.
  • In 1989, he was chosen to be a member of the Royal National Academy of Medicine. This is a very respected group of top doctors and scientists.
