Who Is Albulena Haxhiu?
Albulena Haxhiu is a Kosovar leader who works in government to make and explain fair laws. She is a dedicated member of a political group called Vetëvendosje. Over many years, people voted for her to speak for them in the national parliament. She later became the Minister of Justice, helping look after the country's legal system. Later, she reached high positions, including leading the parliament and serving as acting president.
Early Life and School Years
Albulena was born on 11 May 1987 in the capital city of Pristina. At that time, the region was part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Today, Pristina is the vibrant capital city of the Republic of Kosovo. Growing up, she learned a lot about public service from her family. Her grandfather was Ahmet Haxhiu, a famous activist who worked to help his community.
As a student, Albulena was very interested in fairness and rules. She went to college at the University of Pristina, where she studied law and money systems. She wanted to learn even more about how justice works. So, she continued her studies at the South East European University in the city of Tetovo. These classes helped her understand how courts operate and prepared her for public service.
Serving as a Lawmaker
After finishing school, Albulena decided to enter public life. She joined the political movement known as Vetëvendosje. In the 2010 Kosovan parliamentary election, voters chose her to join the national parliament, called the Assembly of the Republic of Kosovo. She was quite young, but she worked very hard for the people.
Voters continued to trust her to represent them in many national votes. She won re-election in the 2014 Kosovan parliamentary election, the 2017 Kosovan parliamentary election, and the 2019 Kosovan parliamentary election. While working in parliament, she joined important teams called committees. She helped lead groups that checked new laws to make sure they followed proper rules.
Working as Minister of Justice
In 2020, her political team did very well in elections. Prime Minister Albin Kurti chose her to join his first cabinet as the Minister of Justice. She took over the role from previous leaders like Selim Selimi. Her job was to make sure legal systems ran smoothly and fairly. Her first time in this job was short because the government changed after a few months.
Her political group won even more support in local races, including the 2021 Kosovan local elections. Soon after, Prime Minister Kurti invited her back to serve in the second Kurti cabinet. She worked as Minister of Justice again for several years. Being a minister is a very hard job, and people watched her work closely. Sometimes, other leaders shared different opinions about the best way to protect judicial independence in the courts.
Leading the Assembly of Kosovo
Lawmakers face many changes, and parliament held the February 2025 Kosovan parliamentary election. During this time, other politicians chose Dimal Basha to lead the meetings. Later, after the December 2025 Kosovan parliamentary election, the members of parliament held another vote. This time, they picked Albulena to be the official Assembly speaker.
As speaker, she had to lead debates and keep order when leaders discussed important laws. She was chosen by a vote of 66 to 44. Her job was to make sure every elected representative got a fair chance to speak. It was an important job that showed how much influence she had earned over her career.
Becoming the Acting President
In early 2026, the term of President Vjosa Osmani came to an end. Under the country's rules, the speaker takes over if leaders need more time to choose a new head of state. Because of this rule, Albulena automatically became the acting president of Kosovo.
The assembly tried to hold the 2026 Kosovan presidential election, but they could not agree right away. Because they needed a clear choice, leaders called the 2026 Kosovan parliamentary election to pick a new parliament. Albulena stayed in her post and helped guide the nation peacefully. Later, another leader named Justina Pula took over the presidential duties.
Family Life and Interests
Outside of her busy work in politics, Albulena enjoys spending time with her family. She is married to Alban Krasniqi, who also cares about public service. Her husband ran for local office as mayor in the town of Malishevë. Together, they have three children. She balances her busy public duties with raising her family at home.
