The president is chosen by the parliament. This happens through a secret vote. To win, a candidate needs at least two-thirds of the votes from the members of parliament. History of Kosovo's Presidents
The first president after the Kosovo War was Ibrahim Rugova. He served until he passed away in January 2006. After him, Fatmir Sejdiu became president.
In 2010, Fatmir Sejdiu resigned. Then, Jakup Krasniqi temporarily took over as acting president. In 2011, Behgjet Pacolli was elected, but this election was later found to be against the rules. So, he stepped down.
It was decided that a new president would be chosen for a short time. Also, there were plans to change the rules so that people could vote directly for the president in the future. On April 7, 2011, Atifete Jahjaga was elected president. She was a high-ranking officer in the Kosovo Police before becoming president.

Acting Presidents of Kosovo
An Acting President of Kosovo is someone who temporarily takes over the president's duties. This happens when the main president cannot do their job. The person who usually steps in is the Speaker of the Assembly of Kosovo.
