Before the Kosovo War, Mr. Sejdiu was an early activist. He protested against the government in Yugoslavia. He also helped create groups that worked for freedom. He was part of the team that organized a vote for Kosovo's independence in 1991.

From 1992 to 2001, he was a member of the Parliament of the Republic of Kosovo. He served as the Secretary General of Parliament. He also chaired the Constitutional Commission. Many people admired him for being honest and fair in his political work.

The Kosovo War started in 1998. This was due to ongoing conflicts between the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) and Yugoslav forces. In 1999, there were reports of unfair treatment towards ethnic Albanians. This led to NATO forces bombing the Yugoslav government. The war ended in mid-1999. Kosovo then became a place managed by the United Nations. Ibrahim Rugova became the president of the area.

Fatmir Sejdiu took over from President Rugova. He became the first President of Kosovo. This happened when Kosovo declared independence from Serbia on February 17, 2008.

Mr. Sejdiu was one of the people who started the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK). He served in different leadership roles within the LDK. He was also the Secretary General of the party for two terms.

He was part of the Assembly of Kosovo. He also helped write the rules for Kosovo's temporary self-government in 2001. He was an important member of the LDK party. On February 10, 2006, Fatmir Sejdiu was elected President of Kosovo. He won with two-thirds of the votes from the Kosovo Assembly members. This happened after President Rugova passed away from lung cancer earlier in 2006. World leaders praised Mr. Sejdiu. They liked that he focused on good government and making sure all ethnic groups could live together peacefully.

As President, Mr. Sejdiu led Kosovo's team in important talks. These talks were about Kosovo's final status. They took place in Vienna and were helped by international groups. He also led Kosovo's team in 120 more days of talks with Serbia. These talks were helped by people from the US, EU, and Russia. After these talks, Kosovo declared its independence. Mr. Sejdiu helped write the Declaration of Independence. He was also the first person to sign it.

On January 9, 2008, Mr. Sejdiu stepped down as President. He did this to run again in the elections held that same day. This allowed him to start a new term. The Constitution of Kosovo does not limit how many terms a president can serve. He was re-elected in the third round of voting. He received 68 votes, which was enough to win.

On September 27, 2010, he resigned from being President of Kosovo. This was due to concerns about the Constitution. The Constitutional Court of Kosovo said that Fatmir Sejdiu was breaking the Constitution. This was because he was both the President of Kosovo and the leader of the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) at the same time.

In November 2010, he lost the LDK leadership election to Isa Mustafa.

  • He received the Skanderbeg's Order from the President of Albania.
