Early Life and Education
Isa Mustafa was born on May 15, 1951, in a village called Prapashtica in Kosovo. His family spoke the Albanian language. He went to primary and high school in Pristina.
After high school, he studied at the University of Pristina. He earned a master's degree and later a PhD in Economics. A PhD is a very high university degree, showing deep knowledge in a subject. In 1974, he started working as a teacher at the University of Pristina.
Political Career Highlights
Isa Mustafa started his political journey in the early 1980s. From 1984 to 1988, he was the head of the local government in Pristina. This means he was like the city's main leader.
In the 1990s, when Yugoslavia was breaking apart, Mustafa became the Minister of Economy and Finances. He was part of a special government that worked from outside Kosovo. His job was to manage the country's money matters.
After the Kosovo War ended in 1999, he returned home. In 2006, he started working as an advisor to the President of Kosovo, Fatmir Sejdiu.
Becoming Mayor of Pristina
In December 2007, Isa Mustafa was elected as the Mayor of Pristina. He won against another important politician. He was re-elected for a second term as mayor in November 2009.
Leading a Political Party
On November 7, 2010, he became the leader of the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK). This is one of the main political parties in Kosovo. He won the election to become party leader.
In December 2013, he lost his re-election bid for Mayor of Pristina. This was a surprise because Pristina had usually supported his party.
Serving as Prime Minister
On December 8, 2014, Isa Mustafa became the Prime Minister of Kosovo. He formed a government with another political party. As Prime Minister, he said his government would focus on making the country's economy stronger.
In September 2015, while speaking to the Assembly of Kosovo (which is like the country's parliament), some lawmakers showed their disagreement during his speech about agreements with Serbia and Montenegro.
On May 10, 2017, his government lost a "vote of no-confidence." This means that the parliament decided they no longer trusted his government to lead. After this, he decided not to run for Prime Minister again. He stayed on as Prime Minister until a new one was chosen in September 2017.
In August 2019, Isa Mustafa was re-elected as the leader of the Democratic League of Kosovo for the third time.
In July 2020, he shared that he had been diagnosed with COVID-19. He later announced that he had fully recovered.
In February 2021, after his party did not get good results in the elections, Isa Mustafa announced he would step down as party leader. He officially resigned in March 2021.
