Avdullah Hoti's Political Journey
Avdullah Hoti joined the political party called the LDK in 2006. In 2008, he was chosen to be the vice president of Pristina, which is the capital city of Kosovo. He held this position until 2013.
Becoming a Minister
In 2014, Hoti ran in the parliamentary elections and was elected as the Minister of Finance. He was in charge of Kosovo's money matters. He served in this role until 2017. At that time, the government lost a vote of no confidence, which means enough lawmakers voted to remove the government from power.
Running for Prime Minister
After his time as Finance Minister, Hoti became the LDK party's candidate for Prime Minister of Kosovo in the 2017 elections. From 2017 to 2020, he led the LDK group in the parliament. In 2020, he became the First Deputy Prime Minister.
Later in 2020, the government led by Albin Kurti lost a confidence vote. The LDK party then nominated Avdullah Hoti to be the next Prime Minister. There was some discussion about whether he could form a government without new elections. However, on May 28, 2020, Kosovo's Constitutional Court decided that Hoti was allowed to form a government.
On June 3, 2020, Avdullah Hoti was officially elected as the Prime Minister of Kosovo. He received 61 votes in favor from the parliament.
Key Agreements and Events
In August 2020, Hoti shared that he had COVID-19. He had mild symptoms and worked from home for two weeks.
On September 4, 2020, Prime Minister Hoti and Aleksandar Vučić, the President of Serbia, signed an important agreement. This agreement was about making economic relations between Serbia and Kosovo more normal. It happened at the White House in the United States, with Donald Trump, who was the US President at the time, also present. The agreement aimed for easier travel and trade, including by train and road. Both sides also agreed to work with US banks and join the Mini Schengen Zone. A big part of this agreement was also that Kosovo and Israel would recognize each other.

End of Term
On December 21, 2020, Kosovo's Constitutional Court made a ruling. They said that one lawmaker's vote for Avdullah Hoti's government was not valid. This meant that the government did not have enough votes to stay in power. Because of this, Kosovo had to hold new elections. Hoti's government continued to serve as a caretaker government until the new elections were held.
