Albuñol has a very long history! Scientists have found signs of people living here a very, very long time ago. These ancient remains were discovered in a place called the Cave of Bats, which is part of the Albuñol area.

Historians believe the town of Albuñol itself started with the Romans. Later, during the time of the Moors (who were people from North Africa), the Alpujarra region was very important. Albuñol was one of the biggest towns in the area, known as Great Cehel or Gran Costa. During these centuries, the town was protected by the castle of La Rábita.

In the 1500s, a person named Luis Zapata Portocarrero bought the town from the Spanish Crown. Albuñol was even given the special title of "city." After the Moors were asked to leave in 1570, new people came to live in the Alpujarra region. These new settlers came from other parts of Spain like Castile, Galicia, and Leon. However, it wasn't until the 1600s that Albuñol itself was repopulated.

In 1834, Albuñol became the main town for a special legal area. Today, that legal office is located in a different town called Motril.
