Alby Mangels was born in the Netherlands on November 16, 1948. In 1955, his family moved to Australia and settled in Adelaide, South Australia.
When Alby was fifteen, his mother passed away. He left school at fourteen. As a teenager, he worked many different jobs. These included chicken farming and building houses.
Starting the World Safari Journeys
In 1971, Alby Mangels began a big trip with his friend, John Fields. They planned for it to be a single journey. But it turned into a six-year adventure across several continents! They filmed everything they did.
The first film from this trip was shown in Australia in 1977. It was a huge success. Alby kept traveling and filming throughout the 1980s. He made two more World Safari films from these later adventures.
