About Alda Lara
Alda Lara was born in Benguela, Angola, on June 9, 1930. She grew up in a wealthy family. She received a Christian education. This education helped her develop a free-thinking spirit. Her brother, Ernesto Lara Filho, was also a famous poet.
Her Education and Early Writing
Alda first went to a women's school in Sá da Bandeira. This city is now called Lubango. Later, she moved to Portugal to finish high school. She studied at Lisbon University. While there, she lived at the House of the Students of the Empire. Alda was very active during her student years. She started her writing journey by publishing poems. These poems appeared in a literary magazine called Mensagem. This magazine was made especially for African writers. After Lisbon, Alda went to the University of Coimbra. She earned a degree in medicine there.
Her Career and Family Life
Alda Lara wrote for many newspapers and magazines. These included the Jornal de Benguela and the Jornal de Angola. She also wrote for ABC e Ciência. She married Orlando Albuquerque, a writer from Mozambique and Portugal. Together, they had four children.
After living in Portugal for 13 years, Alda moved back to Angola in 1961. Sadly, her return was short. She died on January 30, 1962, in Cambambe.
Her Works and Legacy
After Alda's death, her husband published her collected writings. These included Poemas in 1966 and Tempo de Chuva in 1973. Alda Lara's poems and short stories often focused on important topics. She wrote about motherhood and children. She also wrote about freedom and justice. Many of her poems showed her unhappiness with colonial rule.
To honor her, the city of Lubango created the Alda Lara Prize. This award is given to writers. Paulo de Carvalho, a famous Portuguese singer, recorded a song. It was called "Preludio/Mãe Negra" and used a poem written by Alda Lara. In 2013, the singer Aline Frazão released her second album, Movimento.
